Every Woman
Every Woman
Story
I'm taking part in the 2014 Melbourne Marathon Festival and hoping to raise much needed funds for charity.
Every year across the world a staggering 287,000 women die in pregnancy and childbirth. 99% of these preventable deaths take place in developing countries.
In Karabole in Western Uganda, the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate stands at 11.3% - high even for Uganda. The under 5 mortality rate currently sits at 129/1000. The maternal mortality ratio currently sits at 435/100,000 births (to put that in perspective, in Australia the last MMR was 6 per 100,000 births).
In Uganda, women’s lives are characterised by high levels of poverty, illiteracy rates, heavy work-loads and powerlessness, limited involvement in matters as important as their own health care and access to reproductive services.
Maranatha Health is an Australian and Ugandan not-for-profit organisation that is committed to raising health outcomes through engaging and empowering local communities in in Karabole and providing medical treatment that would otherwise be inaccessible. Poverty and sickness create a vicious cycle. Improving access to quality health care will provide opportunities to women and their families, breaking this cycle.
Activity
Maranatha Health (Maranatha Hospitals Aid and Development Fund Australia Incorporated)
Maranatha Health is a not-for-profit organisation based in Australia and Uganda that aims to improve health outcomes, empower the poor, and make positive lasting change to village life in rural Uganda. Maranatha Health has a project centre in Kamwenge district, western Uganda.
We provide essential health care for mothers and children; strengthen and improve the effectiveness of the current health system; support community based development and deliver HIV/AIDs treatment and care. Our aim is to empower locals so that they can participate in the development of their own communities.
We invite you to join us on this adventure in Africa that will change people’s lives.
