Running for Reuben
Story
Reuben is a beautiful 2 year old boy at the our early childhood centre. Reuben is a friendly and loving boy who has the ability to put a smile on your face no matter how your day is going. Dominic, Reuben's older brother says, "I love Reuben this much" as he spreads his arms as wide as he can reach, "he's my best little brother and I love to do funny things with Reuben."
Reuben has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a genetic disease which causes loss of nerves in the spinal cord and muscles become weaker over time. This weakness not only affects arms, legs and neck muscles but also affects the muscles which assist breathing, couching and swallowing. A baby is born with SMA every 7 hours worldwide and 1 in 35 people cary this gene. Australia's Spinal Muscular Atrophy Association of Australia relies on donations and raising funds through events to support families living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Thanks to this foundation, Reuben has the proper chairs to sit and enjoy playing with his friends, equipment to stand next to his hero his big brother, Reuben's family has the much needed emotional support and much more.
This October I'll be Running for Reuben by running the Full Marathon in the 2015 Melbourne Marathon Festival and hoping to raise as much awareness and donations for the Spinal Muscular Atrophy Association of Australia and support Reuben and other children with SMA.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy Association of Australia Inc
The Spinal Muscular Atrophy Association of Australia Inc. is the first national service supporting families and individuals affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy. As a non-government funded charity we rely solely on philanthropic bodies and fundraising to provide support, information and assistive technology to members. Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a genetic disease divided into 4 types; leading to progressive muscle weakness and wastage. This wastage of muscles not only affectes the sufferes external muscles like arms and legs, but all their internal muscles like breathing, coughing and swallowing. The Associations Equipment and Resource Library has been developed to allow members to utilise specialised equipment, aids, and educational tools. ABS documents that 52 Australian lives 1. are lost to SMA and related syndromes ( Motor Neurone disease) each month. As there is no treatment, much less a cure, our fundraising also contributes to vital research. With 1 in 35 people indiscriminately carrying the SMN gene; greater awareness provided by SMA Australia alone is crucial to the education of future generations.
